Foster Gulch Golf Course

We decided to stay in Lovell, WY for the evening and found this nice Locally 1984 designed 9 hole course ready to be played. Story has it that a group of farmers wanted a golf course so they donated some land and built the first five (5) to see how it would be accepted. Everything went good so they built the next four (4) holes on the other side of the road. They have four (4) tees to play from Gold 2,940/2,940yds @ 69.0 / 118 down to Red 2,307/2,307yds @ 67.4 / 118 on this Par 36/36 rolling scattered tree layout with a small stream cutting through. The tee boxes were in great shape, fairways full green, rough slightly longer with some mixed hard pan areas and great greenside grass to smooth rolling greens. The many sand traps were the biggest suprise as they were "Black Coal Dust" and blasted out like the best white sand greens I've ever played. Was told they drain water great and never need to be fluffed. The Front 9 starts out with a straightaway 421yd Par 5 with O.B. down the entire RH side to a small raised green for a easy Par. The #2 Par 3 plays 171yds with a small green with a LH side sand (coal) trap. The #3 maybe a short Par 4 at 259yds but fairway tightness and creek makes hitting 150yds off the tee a smart choice as the greenskeeper told me earlier, if you want a easy Par, Thanks for the tip. The #4 is 367yd Par 4 is a narrow tee shot with a very raised green with a face to reject all short shots. The #5 is a 350yd Par 4 with a large tree blocking LH side of fairway 130yds out and very tight landing 180-210yds out and a wide creek at 210yds out, hitting to a large green. The #6 is a 270yd Par 4 from the elevated tee to a slight dogleg left with a marsh across the fairway at 180-210yds out and then a narrow landing corner to a very small flat green. Smart play is hitting rightside of the 100yd marker and throw a dart to the green. The #7 is a tough 165yd Par 3 into the wind to a nicely tipped green with O.B. if you land anywhere but short front. The #8 is their Hcp 1 Par 4 at 421yds with a O.B. right to this narrow straightaway rolling fairway to a small green with a miss left very safe. The #9 is a straightaway uphill/downhill 525yd Par 5 that is into the normal winds with O.B. on both sides. The large raised green allows you finish with a easy par if those first two (2) shots find the fairway. Played two (2) balls from the Gold tees as I didn't have time for a double loop and shot 39/42 w/31putts. Yes, my 2nd ball did worse than the 1st because I didn't play safe and found trouble. Great original family run course with locals donating their time to keep cost down and conditions up to Par. Must play if your in this area.
